My first experience at Kandy Toastmasters

A warm welcome to Public Speaking!

Public speaking has always been something I admire from afar but never fully embraced until I attended my Toastmasters meeting in 2023. Walking in, I wasn't sure what to expect. Would I have to speak right away? Would I make a fool of myself? These questions ran through my mind, but as soon as stepped in, I was met with something completely unexpected, a friendly, homely atmosphere. From the moment I arrived I felt ease. The members greeted me with warm smiles, engaging conversations and genuine interest of my presence!

I had come to the exact place that my heart was searching! 😊

I highly recommend Toastmasters where a group of friend;y souls cheering you, encouraging you and empowering you to build up your own confidence!

Do you have such experiences to share...?

  1. I have the same experience as yours. The nervousness and uncertainty before walking in, disappeared because of the warmth and encouragement from the members. This makes Toastmasters such a special community. It really helps people step into their potential without feeling judged.

  2. I fully agree with the friendly atmosphere that prevails at Kandy Toast Masters Meetings
My first experience with Toastmasters was when we (Inner Wheel Club of Kandy) arranged Young Speakers Contest in in 2004 in the Central Province and the Colombo Toastmasters were coordinating with us to train school children for the contest. I was very impressed at the simple and friendly way they instructed children to gain confidence and never thought that I will become a Toastmaster myself.
Fast forward 15 years, and I was taking up leadership roles in other organizations, I was told that TMs was the right choice to improve myself. My husband was a member already and I became keen as I saw the enthusiasm he showed to be at the meetings. I had my own private support to attend the meeting even though I was feeling a bit reluctant to meet the other members. Yet, when I arrived, I felt all the anxiousness dissolving as everyone was making me feel at home.
This friendly support has helped me to organize myself not only for TM Meetings, but also plan ahead for all my other commitments.
The Kandy Toastmasters is a place where we learn and in the process others also learn to reach higher levels of leadership and confidence.

  3. I perfectly understand what you mean TM Madhuri. I got in touch with Toastmasters at a very young age because both my parents were members at that time. And even though I was a small kid schooling in the lower grades I felt so welcome in the environment. As soon as I turned 18 I joined Toastmasters and continuing till up to date. Throught the experience I had, wheather is in Kandy, Colombo, in and also out of Sri Lanka, all the experiences I've had with everyone felt so homely.

I think Toastmasters is flvery helpful in day to day lives, not only for public speaking but to just speak to the public. So even one on one small talk and just getting to know a person or sparking up a conversation with a complete stranger that I might never meet again has been very comfortable because of the skills I've learned through Toastmasters

    1. TM Thilina,
What a wonderful insight you have with Toastmasters!! I'm sure the thoughts you share with us very humbly would have gained by being in and out of the Toastmasters over the years. Sometimes I feel sad to miss this valuable venture. The Kandy Toastmasters are special because of the humble souls like you all!
